01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Even before your first sip, the sight of 10 taps lined along the wall sets an expectant mood. Hamamatsucho's SOUL BIRD keeps 10 domestic and imported craft beers flowing on draft, ranging from crisp wheat beers and fruit-forward pours to roasty dark ales and hop-heavy IPAs. The coolers hold roughly 30 bottled and canned labels from around the globe, offering distinct profiles beyond the tap list. Arriving on the earlier side lets you kick things off with the tasting flight, an option available for orders placed by 18:30 that provides 180 ml pours across 3 different beers.

Leading the food lineup is Jamaican jerk chicken, roasted with a proprietary blend of spices. Its aromatic heat and charred exterior pair effortlessly with a cold pint, and portion options run from solo servings up to full plates. House-made taco meat, simmered over 5 full days with beer and aromatic vegetables, lends rich savory depth to the SOUL BIRD Nachos and cheese-drizzled fries, keeping your glass moving naturally.

Steaming bamboo baskets bring juicy house-made coarse-ground pork shumai dumplings to the table, alongside Utsunomiya gyoza served with a numbing, spicy mala sauce. Thin-crust half pizzas, including a Camembert and tomato sauce pie, make easy bar bites that encourage relaxed conversation.

While the storefront suggests a compact drinking den, the back of the room opens up into a spacious setting accommodating groups. For a substantial finish, the kitchen turns out black fried rice flavored with sweet bean sauce and aged soy sauce, as well as a black-pepper-flecked pecorino-and-garlic pasta. From there, lingering over a dark beer alongside a rich chocolate fondant makes for a satisfying cap to the night.
